Important Values of Co-Creation
Since the concept of creation itself has been created, we have had a very concrete idea of the creator v.s. the content. For example, a writer creates stories– therefore they are the creator. In the same manner, those who read the writer’s works are consumers. Likewise, the role of a consultant mirrors that of the content creator. Also, there may even be a problem that a consumer may have, and thus they opt to work with the consultant.
However, what for instance, if there was a more effective solution? Suffice it to say, the clear lines that once divided the consumer and creator groups are no longer viable. When the creator shares the responsibility of creation with the consumer, the consumer sees themselves in the final product.
When we can claim a stake in a project or a product, we want to deliver the best product possible. It is important to include the client in the process, as it will allow the client to believe that the end result is theirs as well.
In the sharing of ideas, the client and the creator become co-creators each with unique expertise that they bring to the conversation. By working together, we can find answers– even ones that we never could pondering on the problem ourselves. To add, differences in thought and opinions create more efficient solutions.
In today’s day and age, we currently are in a world where we all have a stake in the events surrounding our lives. Even in education, teachers are giving students an active role in their education.
One question we must consider: How can we get both clients and creators to collaborate? When inviting a client into the collaborative space, you should ensure that you remain the one with the expertise, but including the client in the development process. Including the consumer is important– as doing so will allow them to look at the project favorably and even as their own.
Despite this, there are times where collaboration and co-creation would be inappropriate. In times like this, it is best to move ahead as the expert. For example, as a plumber it is difficult to create an environment where both the client and the expert can collaborate– especially if it is a field that many people are not concerned with. Don’t fret, however, as there are still a plethora of chances the creator and the client can have to work together to create a product.
You can be apart of the collaboration process by giving people the tools and equipment they need to become successful.
